CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Kanawha County sheriff's deputies are investigating a report that a student at Shoals Elementary School took a gun to school this week.
Cpl. Brian Humphreys of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department said a third-grader at Shoals went home after school Monday and told his parents another student had shown him a gun in his backpack. The boy's parents then told school officials.
Authorities tried to track down the student, who allegedly brought the gun throughout the evening and night on Monday. Deputies were finally able to talk to both students and their parents this morning, Humphreys said.
Humphreys said no gun was found, but deputies are still exploring whether there was ever a gun at the school on Monday. No charges are expected to be filed, he said.
Deputies remained at Shoals Elementary throughout the school day as a precaution, Humphreys said. School officials are also investigating.
It is a felony to have a gun on school property. Humphreys said anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 304-357-0169.
