CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Kanawha County authorities have released the names of three people involved in separate car wrecks Wednesday.
Sierra Harper, 20, of Tornado was heading north on Coal River Road at about 8:25 p.m. when she apparently lost control of her 1999 Volkswagen Beetle, hit a tree, ran over an embankment and landed upside-down in the Coal River, according to Cpl. Brian Humphreys of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department. He said Harper was able to kick out the window glass and swim safely to shore.
A few minutes later, Gerlethia Mason, 45, of Garner, N.C., was heading north on U.S. 119 near the Clendenin exit of Interstate 79 when she apparently lost control of her car and smashed into an oncoming vehicle driven by Ramona Abbott, 53, of Walton, Humphreys said. Abbott was killed in the incident.
Humphreys said it was raining at the time of both accidents and that weather might have contributed to the crashes.
