SISSONVILLE, W.Va. -- Kanawha County sheriff's deputies said a Sissonville man illegally possessed a rifle to hunt and kill a deer on Monday.
Sgt. J. Thaxton stopped 59-year-old Walter Hamrick for allegedly driving without a seat belt, Kanawha County Cpl. Brian Humphreys said in a news release.
Hamrick was wearing a hunting vest and had a rifle in the passenger seat of his truck. He also had antlers from an 8-point deer he killed earlier Monday.
Thaxton learned that Hamrick was previously convicted of breaking and entering and grand larceny, both felonies.
He was arrested and charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, a misdemeanor. He was also charged with several traffic violations. His driver's license has been revoked for about 13 years for unpaid citations, according to the release. Thaxton seized Hamrick's gun, valid hunting license, vest and deer antlers as evidence.
