CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A St. Albans-area woman was arrested Monday afternoon and charged in the slaying of her mother, who had been missing for more than a week.
Jessica Lee Woods, 36, lived with her mother, Eva Linda Woods, 59, at 336 W. Main St., near St. Albans. Police say she killed her mother and dumped the body in a shed behind their home.
Jessica Woods, her hair hanging in a tangled mass in her face, was arraigned Monday afternoon in front of Magistrate Ward Harshbarger. She was charged with first-degree murder and sent to South Central Regional Jail without bond. She faces life in prison if convicted.
According to a criminal complaint in Kanawha County Magistrate Court, deputies first went to Eva Woods' home on Saturday after neighbors told authorities they hadn't seen her since Feb. 13.
According to the complaint, Jessica Woods and her 15-year-old daughter told deputies they last saw Eva Woods walking in the area on Friday. However, other family members said the teenager was told by her mother to say that.
A man who had been dating Jessica Woods for the past few weeks told deputies she told him she lived by herself and said he never saw Eva Woods at the house, the complaint said.
According to the complaint, Jessica Woods let deputies search the house, but became nervous when they went near the shed out back. She said her mother would become angry if they tried to break down the door to look inside.
On Sunday, Jessica Woods allegedly asked another woman to get a motel room for her. While at the room, Woods told the woman she "couldn't take it any more and went a little too far," according to the criminal complaint. Jessica Woods went on to say she "didn't mean for it to happen," the complaint said.
