CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Supreme Court law clerk is running for justice and a veteran legislator has filed in the race for agriculture commissioner.
Republican Allen Loughry is seeking one of two seats on the Supreme Court up this year. He has been a lawyer at that court for eight years.
Sen. Walt Helmick has joined the Democratic race to succeed retiring Agriculture Commissioner Gus Douglass. He faces three opponents in the May 8 primary. The Pocahontas County lawmaker isn't up for re-election in the Senate until 2014.
Others filing Wednesday include former lawmaker Sheirl Fletcher. She's seeking a Democratic primary rematch with U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin. Manchin won the seat in a 2010 special election. It's up for a full, six-year term this year.
The 2012 candidate filing period ends Saturday.
