CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Wirt County assessor who used public funds for personal gain has been reprimanded and fined $4,000.
The state Ethics Commission also recently sanctioned the mayor of Mason for appointing herself the town's water and sewer commissioner and voting herself a raise.
The State Journal says Assessor Deborah Hennen admitted borrowing public money collected from dog license fees.
She said she'd repay the fund at the end of each month, before the money was turned over to the sheriff. She also acknowledged travel reimbursement discrepancies and her use of public equipment and resources.
Mason Mayor Mindy Kerns, meanwhile, was fined $500 and ordered to repay $1,250 for her actions.
