Another $1.8M poured into W.Va. governor's race
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The major candidates for West Virginia governor have spent another $1.8 million as the general election approaches.
Republican Bill Maloney accounted for $1 million of that spending between Sept. 24 and Oct. 21. Most of Maloney's money went toward TV ads.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin spent $780,619 during the reporting period. But the Democratic incumbent outraised Maloney for that month. Tomblin attracted more than $501,000, with just over half that coming from fundraising events.
Maloney raised $131,000. The Morgantown business owner and drilling consultant also loaned his campaign another $750,000. That brings his self-funding total to $1 million.
Tomblin reported a $330,000 campaign balance heading into the race's final two weeks. Maloney had just under $90,000.
Friday's filings are the last from the candidates before the Nov. 6 general election.
