MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Morgantown voters could lose their ability to vote by mail in municipal elections.
The Dominion Post reports that City Council on Monday approved on first reading a repeal of the ordinance that allows Morgantown to participate in a state pilot program. The secretary of state's program allows voting by mail in municipal elections.
Council member Bill Byrne opposes repealing Morgantown's participation in the program. He says it would be a step backward for the city.
A public hearing and a second reading of the proposed repeal will be held before a final decision is made.
Morgantown held its first vote-by-mail election in 2011. About 22 percent of the city's 16,621 registered voters cast ballots.
