Social Security offices to shorten hours

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Federal budget cuts mean that local residents will have less time to visit Social Security offices in Charleston and St. Albans.

Starting Nov. 19, the offices will be open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. The offices have been open until 3:30 p.m. The offices will be closed Nov. 23, the day after Thanksgiving.

In addition, starting Jan. 2, 2013, the Social Security offices will close at noon on Wednesdays.

In a news release, Social Security officials said workers would keep working the same number of hours, but the reduced office hours would allow those employees to get one-on-one interviews and claims work done without incurring overtime.

"The significantly reduced funding provided by Congress under the continuing resolution for the first six months of the fiscal year makes it impossible for the agency to provide the overtime needed to handle service to the public as it has done in the past," according to the release.
