Nitro fills vacant council seat

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Nitro City Council members appointed John Montgomery to fill a vacancy on the council during a meeting Tuesday night.

Montgomery, a tax lawyer who had worked for the state, already has served on the council's ordinance and planning committees, Nitro Mayor Dave Casebolt said.

Montgomery ran for mayor in 2008 and was defeated. Casebolt said that what he admires about Montgomery's character is how he jumped into city government after the election and stayed involved.

"He will be a huge asset," Casebolt said. "He's very knowledgeable about taxes."

Council members approved Baker Engineering of Cross Lanes to conduct the second phase of the city's streetscape project. The project would add sidewalks on both sides of 21st Street, from Bank Street to Second Avenue
