Fairmont offers classes on government

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The city of Fairmont is launching a program to educate residents about the roles and responsibilities of government.

Fairmont 101 is a monthly class modeled after a similar program in Decatur, Ga.

For $20, residents can learn about planning, economic development, public safety, utilities and more.

City Manager Jay Rogers says the staff is excited to share the inner workings of municipal government with citizens. He says people often don't understand how highly regulated some operations are.

Rogers hopes Fairmont 101 will not only educate but also give the city's department managers some valuable feedback.

The program begins April 18 and will be held once a month through November, with morning and evening classes.
