Richard Bailey Sr.
Richard "Dickie" "Big Daddy" Bailey Sr., 67, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 15, at Charleston General Hospital after a short illness with his family by his side.

Dickie was a member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the brotherhood.

He was born in Spring Hill on September 22, 1945, and was a graduate of South Charleston High School.

Dickie retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways in 2000 after 32 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his father, Murl Bailey; mother, Leola Bailey; brother, Joseph; aunt, Peggy Jordan of South Charleston; and uncle, Maurice Jordan of Ohio.

He is survived by his loving, devoted wife of 46 years, Sparkle; two wonderful sons, Richard Jr. (Karen) of St. Albans and William Kenneth (Ella) of Charleston; grandsons, Kenneth Ray Shawn, Marques Allen, Joshua Devon and Jason (Lynell) of Arizona; granddaughters, Bridget and Brittney of Columbus, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Jeanne (Billy) Simmons, Maureen (John) Randall and Irene Williams, all of Sun City, Calif. and Janice Williams of Anaheim, Calif.; brother-in-law, Kenneth Williams of Las Vegas, Nev.; special mention to Ross Smith, who was like a son; and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.

Viewing and service will be held at Pilgrim Home Baptist Church, St. Albans, on Saturday, June 22, with the viewing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the service to follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Phil Dillard officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Repass will be held at St. Paul Baptist Church, St. Albans.

David Lawrence Bruner
Mr. David Lawrence Bruner, 57, of South Charleston, formerly of Kanawha City, passed away June 18, 2013, at home.

David was employed with Mullin Plumbing. He was certified in HVAC and was a licensed electrician. He also had his ASE certification. David was a graduate of Charleston High School and West Virginia University. He was an avid dirt bike rider. He enjoyed playing tennis, photography and was an auto mechanic.

The family would like to say a special thank you to the Mullin Plumbing family and Hospice for everything you did for David and his family.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Kay Fox Bruner.

He is survived by his wife, Debbra Bruner; father, Harry C. Bruner Sr.; siblings, Harry C. Bruner Jr., Kathy Ruth and husband, Dick Bruner and William R. and wife, Kelly Bruner; six nieces and nephews; one great-niece; three pets, Khufu, Miss Kitty and Gracie; and two lifelong friends, David Bird and George Adkins.

A tribute to the life of Mr. David Bruner will be noon Friday, June 21, at Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jess Inclenrock officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.

Joyce Sue Chaffin, 49, of Cowen, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Webster County Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

She was born October 22, 1963, at Summersville, a daughter of Harold and Wanda Tyler Gadd.

Joyce was a homemaker and a graduate of Webster County High School. She enjoyed cooking and working in her yard. She was an avid bingo player and a Methodist by faith.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of 33 years, Robert Chaffin Sr. of Cowen; children, Crystal Chaffin of Cowen and Robert Chaffin Jr. of Cowen; brothers, Burton (Bobbie) Gadd of Richmond, Va., Gary (Sonya) Gadd of Cowen and Eric (Teresa) Gadd of Craigsville; sister, Becky McCartney of Webster Springs; grandmother, Audrey Tyler of Cowen; mother-in-law, Bertha Chaffin of Cowen; grandchildren, Zane Collins, Raylea Smith, Hunter Chaffin and Garrett Chaffin; special friends, Stephanie Brewster and family, Melissa Chaffin, Butch and Tina Mathes, Crystal Dillon and Elaine Wolfe; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother, William Gadd and father-in-law, Don Chaffin.

Betty L. Manley, 87, previously of Boomer, passed away June 18, 2013, at the home of her daughter in Ringgold, Ga.

Betty was born October 31, 1925, to the late Cody and Flora Baker. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles Manley; daughter, Debbie Propes; and brother, James Baker. Left to cherish her memory are her loving children, Dane (Brenda) Manley and Robin (David) Hardie; brother, Bill Baker; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Boomer Baptist Church for over 50 years, where she taught Sunday school and served in children's ministry.

Mrs. Ruth E. McClanahan, 94, of Red House, passed away June 18, 2013, at Genesis Putnam Center.

Mrs. McClanahan was a member of Paradise Bible Church and the Hometown Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvie McClanahan and sons, Frank and Pete McClanahan.

She is survived by her daughter, Ethel Sheets of Eleanor; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Eugene "Geno" McKenzie
Eugene "Geno" McKenzie, 84, of Rainelle, passed away Monday morning, June 17, 2013, at Morgantown following a long illness. Born June 26, 1928, at Marfrance, he was the son of the late James V. and Barbara Greco McKenzie. He operated several different coal mines and was an entrepreneur. During his lifetime, Geno wore many hats, including elected political office (three-term mayor of Rainelle), entrepreneur, contractor and coal operator. However, his proudest achievement was the knowledge that he was able to use his God-given talents to employ thousands of hard-working West Virginians to which, in return, they were able to support their families. Geno believed in hard work and that others should work hard too. He was a lifelong supporter of the West Virginia coal industry. During his lifetime he gave back to his community, including the two areas of Greenbrier County that he considered home, Quinwood and Rainelle. Additionally, as a supporter of education, Geno encouraged all persons to reach for their educational aspirations and provided significant scholarships for graduating students in the western Greenbrier area. Geno was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rainelle.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Margaret Jean Phalen McKenzie, in 1999 and two sisters, Marian M. Korczowski and Lucy McKenzie.

He leaves behind a daughter, Gina McKenzie of Richmond, Va.; two sons, Tony McKenzie of Morgantown and James "Jimmy" McKenzie of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Patsy Brinkoetter of Decatur, Ill. and Flora Jane Gatley of Falls Church, Va.; three brothers, Joseph McKenzie of Norfolk, Va. and Vincent McKenzie and Thomas McKenzie, both of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren; his close friend, Jan Miller and her family; and his life companion, Joyce Hawks.

Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 21, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rainelle, with Father Rey Landicho officiating. Burial will follow at End of the Trail Cemetery, Clintonville.

Marcella McNeely, 68, of Ridgeview, departed this life on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, in the comfort of her own home.

She was born October 22, 1944, at Leon, Ky., a daughter of the late Edward and Ruth (Fields) Burke.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Burke.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Loral Pete McNeely; three daughters, Serena Workman, Susan McCallister and Patricia Cline; one son, Loral "Buddy" McNeely; two sisters, Jean Kirk and Connie Harless; one brother, Charles Burke; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many special friends, brothers and sisters in Christ.

Jonathan Mokas, 38, passed away Sunday, June 16, surrounded by his family and friends after a short illness.

He was a loving husband, father, brother and son.

Larry Dale Morris
Larry Dale Morris, 55, of Lorain, Ohio, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at his home after a sudden illness.

Larry was born May 30, 1958, in Clay County. He had been a Lorain resident for the past 25 years, moving from Amherst.

Larry worked for Chris's Restaurant as a cook since 1981.

He was a member of Everspring Baptist Church in South Amherst. He was also a member of the NRA. He enjoyed fishing, watching NASCAR, telling jokes and playing with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Debbie (nee Crabtree) Morris of Lorain; sons, Brian (Angela) Morris and Brad Morris and his fiancee, Kara Varner, both of Lorain; daughter, Brandalyn (Paul) Lee of Lizemores; grandchildren, Hailey, Amy, Michael, Anna, Alana and Clark; parents, Ivan and Aylene Johnston; brothers, Nathan, Sonny, Tim and Scott; sister, Beverly; and many other children and grandchildren he helped raise.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Monnie Morris and brothers, Jimmy and Dennis.

Kemper Taylor Nelson
On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, Kemper Taylor Nelson, 64, of Winfield, went to his final place of rest. With the kind attention of Hubbard Hospice House of Charleston, K.T. joined the family that preceded him in his journey.

K.T. was born February 22, 1949, and lived his early years in Hometown. The family moved to Nitro in 1955. K.T. attended Nitro High School and entered the Army in 1968. He served in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1971. He worked for the city of Eleanor for several years and was a carpenter working out of Point Pleasant Local No. 1159 for many years.

K.T. was a sportsman and outdoorsman who would cast a line in any water available. He enjoyed hunting, especially the trips with his sons where the hunt for game was not always of utmost importance. He loved the freedom of riding his motorcycle and would be out as often as possible. Always quick to joke, K.T. never seemed to meet a stranger. Always helpful and willing to stay for as long as it took, he assisted many with tasks in building and remodeling. He was always there for family and friends. He loved children and children always loved him back. He was bursting with pride for his grandchildren; they will be better for having had him for a time. We will miss his face, his helping hand and his friendship.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John David Nelson Sr. and Edna Allen Nelson and by his brother, John David Nelson Jr.

K.T. is survived by his children, Janie Mills (John) of Salt Rock, David Nelson (Amy) of Apple Grove, Shawn Morgan (Tim) of Bridgeport, Shannon Rudy (Shawn) of Grafton and Robbie Angus (Michelle) of Grafton; grandchildren, Jack Mills, Luke Morgan, Rachel Morgan, Zack Rudy, Skyler Rudy, Taylor Rudy, Alec Angus, Kylie Angus and William Angus; sisters, Gloria "Sis" Hill (Keith) of Apple Grove and Judy "Big Sis" McClanahan of Nitro; brother, Rex Nelson (Valerie) of Nitro; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Bobby Lee "Bob" Shaffer
Bobby Lee "Bob" Shaffer of Elkview and Charleston passed away June 18, 2013, after a short illness. Bob was indeed a "Yankee Doodle Dandy," born on the 4th of July, 1936. He was a true West Virginian at heart. He was a proud and principled man who lived a simple life. He fought a hard fight, but he could not overcome the many health obstacles that were put in his path.

Bob was a member of the 1955 graduating class of Elkview High School. He played guard on the Elkview football team and was a proud member of the 1954 Kanawha Valley Conference Championship team.

He was an Army veteran and was a banker by profession, having worked at Public Finance, Dollar Savings and Loan and Chemical Bank, all located in South Charleston. He worked for the Kanawha County Assessor's Office part time after serving as assistant manager of the Charleston Tennis Club.

Bob was a member of the Charleston Moose Lodge, the Masonic Lodge 153 AF&AM, Scottish Rite in Valley of Charleston, Beni Kedem Shriners of Charleston and a former member of the Beni Kedem Patrol Marching Unit. He served on the Elk River Community Center board of directors and was treasurer of the Elkview High School All-Class Reunion Committee.

He loved golf, football, country music, wilted lettuce salads, the Elk River Community Center, the West Virginia Mountaineers, his family, his friends and most of all, the family farm on Frame Road where he was born.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Starling "Chick" and Irene "Booge" Droddy Shaffer; and his brother, Bill "Hollywood" Shaffer.

Survivors include his sons, of whom he was very proud, Bobby Shaffer of Hurricane and Scott Shaffer of Charleston; grandson, who his grandpa adored, Joshua Robert Shaffer, who attends College of Charleston, Charleston, S.C.; brother, Larry Shaffer and wife, Betty, of Elkview; sister-in-law, Billy Shaffer of Vienna; close cousins, Richard Bailey of Charleston and Mike McNealy of Sissonville; and loving companion of three years, Buffy Thomas of Pinch. He is also survived by several nieces, Tammy, Angie Jodie, Robin and Leigh Ann.

Service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, at Hafer Funeral Home, Elkview, with Pastor Lee Swor officiating. Burial will be in Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney, with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 61, Clendenin and Masonic graveside rites by Masonic Lodge 153 AF&AM, Charleston.

James Pearl Shaffer
James Pearl Shaffer, 60, of Powellton, died June 19, 2013. He was born November 28, 1952, in Smithers and was the son of Betty Bainbridge of Powellton and the late Lawson A. Shaffer.

He was a coal truck driver and he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his sisters, Ruth Ann McLarney and her husband, John, of Elkhart, Ind., Dreama Sue Brand and her husband, Mark, of Charleston, Vickie Leonhardt and her husband, Bob, of Columbus, Ohio and Laura Kiser and her husband, Andy, of Powellton; brothers, Lawson H. Shaffer and his wife, Cindy, of Powellton, Ronald E. Shaffer of Powellton and Frank T. Bainbridge and his wife, Wendy, of Gauley Bridge; and many cousins, nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

Nora Belle Skidmore, 88, of Newville, passed away June 17, 2013, at home.

She was born August 20, 1924, in Wayne County, a daughter of the late John Henry and Nancy Elizabeth Gilkerson Wallace.

Nora was a homemaker and a Christian. She attended Newville United Methodist Church. She loved to quilt, attend the Braxton County Senior Center and sing in the North Sutton Charge Choir. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Bailey Dorse Skidmore; sons, James Bailey Skidmore and William Eugene Wallace; an infant grandson; three brothers; and five sisters.

Surviving are her daughters, Glenna Luzader and husband, Rodney, of Newville, Mary Currence and husband, Roger, of Newville and Polly Gerwig and husband, Gary, of Exchange; son, Danny Skidmore and wife, Mary, of Flatwoods; brother, Tom Wallace of Arizona; sister, Barbara Frame of Frametown; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home with Pastors John McQuain and Ryan Skidmore officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Creek Cemetery, Gassaway.

Josephine H. "Jo" Stone, 67, of Eleanor, passed away June 18, 2013, at her home. Jo was a member of Rock Branch Independent Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She was a member of the Putnam County chapter of the Gideons International Ladies Auxiliary and a founding member of the Glory Bound Quartet. She retired from Putnam County Schools after a 30-year teaching career at George Washington Elementary School in Eleanor.

Born November 2, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Mark Edward Parsons and Alva Helen Gritt Parsons. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Glenn Edward Parsons.

Survivors include her loving husband of 45 years, William "Bill" Stone; son, Mark and his wife, Lourdes Stone, of Eleanor; sister, Sherry Parsons of Eleanor; and granddaughters, whom she loved dearly, Carlee and "Izzy."

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Michael Schiano, Mary Schiano, Dr. Schiano's staff, Dr. Edward Hamrick (staff) and Dr. Bassam Shamma. They would also like to express deep appreciation to Laura, Renee, Lyn and Chaplain Pete of HospiceCare.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 21, at Raynes Funeral Home Eleanor Chapel, Eleanor, with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Entombment will follow at Haven of Rest Memory Gardens, Red House.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home in Eleanor.

Freda E. Taylor
Freda E. Taylor, 95, of Summersville, passed away at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley, on Tuesday, June 18, 2013. Born February 8, 1918, at Roane County, she was a daughter of the late John and Laura Rucker Moore. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Ben Taylor, who passed away in 1992; by a daughter, Glena Gay Taylor Querrey, in 2005; one grandson; and also by five brothers and four sisters.

Freda was a homemaker all of her life, worked raising her six children and showed love and affection to all her extended family.

Survivors include her sons, Dewey H. Taylor and wife, Mary Ellen, of Ravenswood, Dana H. Taylor of Washington Courthouse, Ohio and Russell E. Taylor and wife, Sandi, of Taylors, S.C.; daughters, Zelma Joyce Craig and husband, David, of Newark, Ohio and Lela Grace Wilmonth and husband, Joe, of Mount Nebo; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at White Funeral Home, Summersville, with Pastor Dana Gatewood officiating. Interment will follow Walker Memorial Park, Summersville.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Randolph P. White
Randolph P. "Whitey" White, 94, of Salem, Va., formerly of St. Albans, passed away Monday, June 17, 2013, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va.

He was a son of the late Hansford Edward and Mary Louise White. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Ross William White and Randall Edward White and his sisters, Kathryn Sarrett and Margaret Carpenter.

Whitey was a member of Pleasant View Church of God and was retired from Union Carbide Corp. after 41 years of service. He was also an employee of IAN 598 and Bartlett Funeral Home. He was a member of the Junior Mechanics Lodge, No. 123, a 50-year member of Washington Masonic Lodge No. 58 AF&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies and the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter No. 79.

Whitey served his country during World War II with the United States Army. Following this effort he married Reba Young, who was the mother of his son, David. Whitey was a devoted husband and father, always knowing what family is all about.

Surviving are his wife of 11 years, Sandra Foit White; his son, David (Diana Lynn) White of Lugoff, S.C.; stepchildren, Todd (Darla) Wilson of Salem, Va. and Catrina M. (Randy) Thompson of Bowling Green, Va.; his nephews, Hank White of Cincinnati, Ohio and Holly White of Scott Depot; his niece, Levonna Upton of Virginia; special grandchildren, Bentley Ryan and Allyson E. Thompson, both of Virginia; and special little friend, Jordan Gearhart of Virginia. Other friends include Delbert Workman and Eblyn Blake, both of St. Albans and Dave Workman of Springfield, Ohio.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, 409 Sixth Ave., St. Albans. Burial with military honors and Masonic rites will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
