CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Wisecracks about West Virginia politicians being cozy with coal companies are widespread. Everyone hears them -- including Gov. Manchin.
Therefore, you'd think Manchin would have avoided flying on Massey Energy's private executive jet in his rush to reach the Massey mine tragedy in Raleigh County.
As Statehouse columnist Phil Kabler related, the governor was vacationing in Florida when the disaster occurred. Official state aircraft - which Manchin uses endlessly for trips to WVU sports events - somehow couldn't make a quick Florida trip. So Massey sent one of its Gulfstream jets to fetch the governor.
Knowing full well that he was heading to a Massey nightmare, Manchin rode on a Massey luxury craft. It's galling.
