How can people destroy their land?

They are very ignorant of how nature works or else they just don't give a darn.

Long term permanent destruction of the land and soil for short termed profit is a major crime against nature.

To put it another way, it is a crime against us and our grandchildrens children.

It is also a very bad business practice.

    THIS MUST STOP!

Streams are not sewers. They are alive with wildlife, although the creatures are tiny that does not mean that they are not important.

Soil is a living thing and takes thousands of years to form. No, I'm not talking about the topsoil in your yard or garden.

Trees can live to be thousands of years old and can grow to enormous size. (Did you ever see a big tree?)

What kind of person destroys a mountain top and fills in streams?

Do they think the Bible tells them to do this, or are they just uneducated.

Do they think it is a good thing to do?

There is much more to the natural world than Golden Trout and White-Tailed Deer.

Being stupid with money is really not a good thing in the long run.

    THINK ABOUT IT!

This well-argued Opinion Piece clearly evokes a moral test upon our nation's moral fiber. Will the communities and ecosystems at the foot of mountaintop mining operations continue to be crucified on the idolatrous altar of coal profits, or will courageous statesmen and stateswomen pass up King Coal's sumptuous feast table, and with moral rectitude and skill, push back the coal industry's deadly predation?

This is a critical moment not only for the beleaguered people who are suffering from health-harming pollution, but a critical moment for our nation's integrity. In our nation's "moral game of cards," will the Mammon (money lust) card trump the health card? "Dig deep into your hearts and souls," politicians, investors, consumers, and corporate heads.

Before the EPA came on the scene 50 years ago, this nation's water and air was swampy with health-damaging pollution. The EPA protects us! Those who rail hard against EPA can be understood only by their embrace of Mammon.

Bo, looking for more delicate vernacular to address you and you followers, but I am at a loss. You are nuts. Diesel fumes are being emitted, so stop MTR. What about the fumes emitted on the highway system? Are they different and harmless or do you intend to stop all interstate travel and commerce?

If MTR were as deadly as you propose, how are neighboring communities surviving? And they are surviving regardless of your suggestions.

The growing evidence is that of flawed studies by the good Dr at WVU? Do you have other evidence of the harm done by MTR in WV that the studies have been verified by unbiased and qualified science?

Of course everyone must have consumable water. The EPA has incorrectly assumed the control of "clean water Act" in an effort to carry out the Obama charge that they would "bankrupt" those using coal. The only question I have, where are these streams that are too toxic to consume the water and having a direct link to MTR?

No one is trying to bankrupt coal.
There is no war on coal.

Our country has laws to help save lives, not to destroy business.

Why does coal have such a rough time following laws?
They sometimes aspend more money to break laws.

I doubt the judge even visited an on-going MTR site before her ruling. Maybe if she lived under one she might have changed her opinion. Hopefully the ruling will be appealed.

    @Wrathy
Obama made it clear that he planned to bankrupt coal in his Jan 17 2008 speech in San Francisco. And you say he has no war on coal? Open your eyes.

MU4WVU2 I'm not nuts; you are in a state of conditioned denial. Diesel fumes emitted on highways are controlled by Diesel Oxidation Catalyst created through health and safety regulations. Diesel fuel used on mtr sites is not regulated and not allowed in licensed vehicles. Nothing filters the incomplete burning of diesel fuel mix used in blasting; no health and safety regulations for people exposed to diesel fallout from mtr sites. That is fact.
Mtr communities are not surviving well. There are high rates of cancers in mtr communities. That is fact. If you want to disagree with IRB protocol and peer reviewed scientific cancer research we did last year you only do so with coal industry conditioned opinion. Where is your science?
Where is your science concluding the Hendryx research is flawed? The National Mining Association said that Hendryx didn't consider in-breeding in his research. Is that your scientific argument?
Why do you think aquatic life has seized to exist in strea

Bam, are you and Bo one and the same?

Did you consider the quantity fumes emitted by all vehicles v the relatively few working MTR? That was my consideration when referring to the impact on the economy if we stop using the internal combustion engine.

If your research is so accurate, how are people who work MTR surviving? I did and am still kicking. Have you ever been around an MTR job? I would suggest you are totally wrong regarding the effect on the community. The atmosphere removes the fumes quiet well from the community. Have you ever considered MTR to be ongoing in an area a couple years only. MTR does not last decades. After economical coal is removed, they do reclamation and stop the operation. One site is not a lifetime job.

As to the aquatic life, there was a fish hatchery thriving in Man. Man is in Logan County where a fair amount of MTR has occurred. Next.

It's not the fumes from diesel engines we are talking about. It's the incomplete burning of diesel fuel mix blasting that is of concern, along with silica dust and other small particulates generated in blasting. http://www.epa.gov/pm/health.html
I live beneath a 2000 acre mtr site so yes I am around an mtr site every day. I'm happy you're still kicking, many innocents living beneath your work place have not done as well. The atmosphere removes the fumes? Where do they go? Is there a vaporizer somewhere? Where's your science? One highly controlled fish hatchery does not make a case.

If I were the only one still around and kicking, thus showing no ill effects, from working MTR, I would feel very blessed. But, as you and I know, I an not the exception but the rule. Now, where is your scientific evidence that refutes the physical evidence that the vast majority of those who work MTR and live around MTR are quiet void of ill effects derived from MTR?.

You live below a MTR. Have you been tested for Silicosis, the surface equal to underground pneumoconiosis? See one of the congressmen is asking for simpler filing. I worked on the surface, lived beside a cleaning plant and smoked for 50 years. Which coal related check should I apply for?

No, one fish hatchery does not provide absolute proof and remove any possibility that your scientific claims are void. But, it will have to suffice for me, because I have fished the Tug and Guyandotte Rivers and they do have plenty aquatic life surviving. The hearty catfish have always been there. Less hearty bass surviving.

Thanks, and salutations to you. Those well wishing sentiments should be extended to the rest of the MTR group and those who are inconvenienced by the MTR.

Pleas note that the study released today by the group who does health study by county throughout the US showed zero air pollutants in Mingo County. So, perhaps the air quality is not as bad as the anti-MTR group state. Let's hope this study is the one that is accurately reporting.
