Happy trails: Enhance Charleston
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia's capital city has wise leaders who repeatedly add attractive facilities drawing more visitors to Charleston and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
The new "Kanawha Trestle & Rail Trail Master Plan" adopted Monday night by council holds promise as another improvement.
It features nearly two miles of bike lanes and walkways along Kanawha Boulevard from Patrick Street to Magic Island -- plus an eventual link to South Charleston over the abandoned CSX railroad trestle across Kanawha River -- plus extra bike corridors throughout Charleston, linking to an Elk River trail to Coonskin Park on a long-forgotten railway.
We've always felt that lovely Elk River can be a charming recreation feature for Charleston. Possibilities for hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, picnicking -- perhaps swimming -- are tantalizing. We hope city leaders keep exploring its potential.
