'The Future': Al Gore's vision
Advertiser

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A generation ago, The Third Wave by Alvin Toffler was a breakthrough. Toffler outlined civilization's shift caused by the ancient development of agriculture, then another shift caused by the Industrial Revolution, and said humanity finally was plunging into a high-tech knowledge revolution -- the third wave. The book clarified profound changes that were happening to the world's economy and culture.

Now, 33 years later, former Vice President Al Gore has attempted the same grasp in a major new book, The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change. He says civilization rapidly is being transformed by:

  • Loss of national identity in the snowballing global economy.
  •

  • Planet-wide instantaneous electronic communications that are creating a "global mind."
  •

  • Rising Asian and foreign power that erodes America's supremacy.
  •

  • Ruinous population growth and resource depletion.
  •

  • Biochemistry advances enabling modification of life.
