WHY did House Republicans force the U.S. government shutdown? Many took the extreme action because they fear that, if they didn't, tea party zealots would support far-right challengers against them in next year's primary election. But that possibility could benefit America. If the radical challengers won nomination, mainstream voters probably would reject them in the fall, restoring Democratic control of the House. Then, the menace of government shutdowns would be removed.
