Piedmont Elementary School is special to Charlestonians. An outsize share of its pupils come from homeless shelters, public housing projects and low-income neighborhoods -- yet it buzzes with high-quality learning and hope for better futures. It's the sort of school that good-hearted people want to help.
That's what stirred the staff of the nearby Public Service Commission, a state agency regulating utilities. PSC employees set a goal to raise $3,000 for better science equipment and training for Piedmont pupils. But workers gave so generously and held so many fundraisers that they got $6,100.Hurrah for the PSC staff -- and hurrah for Piedmont.
