It's deeply sad that anti-tax residents and people unconcerned about education turned out to kill Kanawha County's excess levy to help schools and libraries.
Only 17 percent of registered voters went to the polls. That's pathetic. It's difficult to believe that 83 percent care so little about children's future and betterment of the community that they simply ignored the special election.
Now that the three-to-one defeat has struck, schools and libraries must pick up the pieces. The Kanawha County Public Library is looking for a way to restore a potential $3 million hole in its budget. Kanawha County Schools will have to decide how to live without $21 million.
It will be painful, and Kanawha County students will bear it.
