Dependence on cheap energy leads to pollution
Editor:
I read John McCoy's Oct. 25 article ("Dunkard polluters need to be punished") expressing the outrage of so many West Virginians to this needless catastrophe.
Then I read Ken Ward's article in the same paper ("Coal vs. climate"), a blunt and frightening synopsis on how difficult, and maybe impossible, carbon-capture storage will be. We may have ominously gone beyond our planet's ability to heal itself.
The idiotic masses, which includes most of the media, only concern themselves with health care, Obama's failings, the economy, etc., ad nauseam. They are like hateful mobs in a huge bar brawl, high not on alcohol but on the perception that they have been wronged.
The sad reality of all of this is our need for cheap energy. We are being swept along with these moronic mobs who are so limited with their thought processes but so empowered by the coal, oil and gas they have been feeding on. God help us.

Table games will harm children's safe future
Editor:
I am so happy to be living in Jefferson County so I can be close to my two granddaughters. It is for their safety and well-being that I am going to vote no to table games on Dec. 5. I am morally opposed to gambling, and the very idea of turning Charles Town into another Las Vegas is frightening.

I want my granddaughters to have a safe future right here. The values of hard work and saving will be the values I teach them, not the get-rich-quick schemes of gambling.
I was always taught that you reap what you sow. If we plant more gambling in this town, what do you think we'll reap? Gambling destroys families, and children pay the price. More gambling will lead to more problem gamblers, and that will result in more broken families, domestic violence, child neglect and child abuse.
The destruction of our families is far too high a price to pay.

Arguments for mining don't really hold up
Editor:
The movement to save mountains and make government enforce mining regulations came from gutsy, hard-working native West Virginians. Those who say otherwise, those who do the name-calling and mudslinging, should have their motives seriously questioned.
If they really care about our jobs, why are they supporting mining practices that eliminate them? If they really care about our traditions, why are they destroying forests and streams, deer, bear, and fish habitat, and jeopardizing cemeteries and schools?

What is the amount of pollution from WV or US coal? Can it be measured? How can US v world pollution from coal be measured? Who are these scientists who want to close WV coal production? Are they dealing with facts or emotions?
Cheap energy? You bet the country needs cheap energy produced in WV at this time. Equally, the country needs any energy to be produced in the US. The money supply is too limited to continue exporting it.
