Religions preach tolerance, not murder

Editor:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Webster defines "fratricide" as the act of one who murders or kills one's own brother. So it is today throughout the Middle East that brothers are murdering brothers by the thousands and on a daily basis. Remember Cain and Abel in the book of Genesis? Sunnis are killing Shiites, Shiites are killing Sunnis, Sunnis and Shiites are killing Kurds, Alawites and Druse, all of them sects of Islam. And in the process, Christians and Jews are being targeted as well. The numerous wars over the centuries and even today are the result of the division of Islam into sects which the Prophet Mohammad, (Peace be upon him), vigorously condemned. In the Quran, the divine message revealed by God (Allah) (Glorified is He) to the Prophet, "The believers are a band of brothers and sisters. Let there be peace among them, and let them honour God with one voice. Thus God will show them mercy." (49:10)

There are three main qualities in Islam that are strongly emphasized in the Quran: forgiveness, justice and the value of human life. "If anyone slew a person, unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land, it would be as if he slew the whole people; and if anyone saved a life, it would be as though he saved the life of the whole people" (5:32). The Quran teaches that every adherent of the faith is to treat others with these same three attributes: forgiveness, justice and the value of human life. To do otherwise will bring damnation. These attributes are not just for believers of Islam, but for all the "People of the Book" (Jews and Christians alike).

The fratricidal wars and killings in the Middle East are driving Western nations, the USA, Russia and China, into their conflicts. Enough is enough! The prophets of old, Abraham, Noah, Moses and David, all revered by Islam, as well as our Lord Jesus Christ and His Blessed Mother Mariam (Mary), have always taught tolerance for all. If you think I am placing all blame of fratricide on the followers of Islam, think again. I would be remiss not to mention the fratricidal killings of Christians, Jews and other people of faith throughout the centuries as well (Spain, the Inquisition, Crusades, Bosnia, Northern Ireland, Africa, Lebanon, Palestine, South Africa, Native and African-Americans, and so many others and now Syria today). When will it end? We are destroying the world and large segments of the human race. May God have mercy on us all!

Clean up the planet for our children

Editor:

Why is everyone so bubbly when it comes to their grandchildren, especially when politicians use the ploy about the debt we are leaving our children?

If we really love our grandchildren we should worry about how much clean air they have to breathe and clean water to drink no matter what the cost.

To continue polluting the planet with no regulation on burning fossil fuels is leaving a death sentence for our grandchildren.

In a republic rule by law if applied justly would curtail polluting the planet without the safety of the public coming first. What happened to clean coal technology?
