Oct. 21, 2012: Board of Education; Gandhi
Board of Education will protect itself
Editor:
Regarding Charles McElwee's Oct. 6 commentary asking "Will the state Board of Education do the right thing?," the answer, I believe, is very simple: The only thing the West Virginia Board of Education will do will be to ensure its own welfare.
Education of the children is not even a basic concern in their minds. The current condition of the education system is proof of that. Anyone expecting different results from the same old bunch is not living in the real world.

Editor:
I was surprised to read the comments by a John Field (in the Oct. 14 Sunday Gazette-Mail), which repeated the slogans that have been circulating on the conservative Internet for years. These slogans, such as "You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong," are inane to say the least.
I prefer the axioms of Gandhi: There should not be "wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, science without humanity, knowledge without character, politics without principle, commerce without morality, and worship without sacrifice."
