Manchin machine runs West Virginia
The recent firing of Dr. Jorea Marple as state superintendent is just another example of how entrenched the Manchin political machine is in every aspect of West Virginia policy.
When then-Gov. Joe Manchin appointed his wife Gayle to the state Board of Education, it was a blatant political power grab. The governor said at the time he was appointing his wife to the board to have better contact with the Board of Education. To borrow a phrase from Randolph County Superintendent Jim Phares, this is "balderdash."
Any governor worth his salt would know that it is essential to have an open line of communication with the state board. Such a line should not require the appointment of a spouse to a position of prominence. Gayle was put on the board so the Manchins could always have a hand in educational policy. In addition to appointing his wife to her board position, Mark Manchin, his cousin, was appointed as head of the School Building Authority by Governor Joe in 2006. The Manchin machine has its tentacles wrapped around nearly every aspect of West Virginia politics. Let's hope that this recent faux pas enlightens West Virginians of the depths that the Manchins run West Virginia.
Firing Marple was despicable act
This letter is written regarding the recent firing of Dr. Jorea Marple and the way it was handled without cause and/or notice. I have seen many inappropriate and despicable things, but this one literally claims the prize.
She was a top-notch administrator with a proven record, and her removal has harmed West Virginia's children. It is amazing that such political crap still exists here and that the powers that be were obviously disturbed by a competent female who actually performed her job better than most.
The only two board members that did the right thing are Priscilla Haden and Jenny Phillips, and we need people like them on the board. The good old boy network is alive and well in West Virginia.
The governor needs to step up and do the right thing and fire the five board members who perpetrated this travesty. If the board is intent on firing Dr. Marple, then a search should be conducted, instead of Sen. Manchin's crony being placed in the position. The fact also that Gayle Manchin serves on this board is a conflict of interest and should not have happened.
Someone of Dr. Marple's stature will succeed wherever she is. Unfortunately, it is West Virginia that has lost.
