Dec. 12, 2012: Socialism; Democrats; Republicans
A New Jersey native who relocated to Virginia and who subsequently purchased a home in the Eastern Panhandle came with the purpose of knocking off the effective attorney general, whose only goal for 20 years was to protect West Virginians from the vultures that exploit them.
The coal magnates joined with the plutocrats using the so-called regulations against their industry, which contributed to the decline of coal mining in our state. They know the truth.
Democratic officials and the party have been fleeced, lied to by the coal magnates, and in turn convinced the uneducated to turn against their own interests.
The Democratic officials such as Manchin, Rahall and Tomblin caved and they will rue the day and many of us will not forget that they were used and will be responsible for the decline of the Democratic Party in West Virginia.
Instead of running against the president, they should have been talking about natural gas, employment and other economic development projects that would provide employment opportunities.

Republicans have no desire to help

Throughout this election campaign, I watched and listened to candidates and Fox TV anchors proclaim "I love America." Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan were perhaps the greatest proclaimers. This was most eloquently and graciously spoken by Mr. Romney in his short concession speech. For this I was truly thankful but kept waiting for "three little words."
During the campaign I had my own "three little words" I silently posed to statements made by Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan and their muttering mercenaries. "Is that right?" "Is that true?" and, if so, "For how long?" were my word choices.
I kept waiting for "three little words" as I watched a jittery Romney concede the election to President Obama. As he wished America and President Obama a bright future, I kept waiting for three little words: I will help!
Until the leadership of the Republican Party and its muttering mercenaries say and mean the three little words "I will help," their party will continue to suffer the effects of both Romnesia and Ryanitis as the world moves on by!

Socialism long a part of American history

Recently you printed a letter wherein a reader believes Obama's administration is turning America into a socialist society. What is wrong with people accepting the fact that historically America has in some form or another always been part socialist?
History has recorded every socialistic move our government has ever initiated. If one is uninformed, they pick up a history book and read about the land-rush eras. Or, broaden themselves about why and how the Civilian Conservation Corps was formed.
How about the Health and Human Resources division of our government?
Even citizens in West Virginia received socialist-based aid from a Roosevelt governmental program. Eleanor Roosevelt, after visiting coalfield families, talked her husband into buying a 200-acre farm. The farm was turned into a town, its ex-coal mine employees received brand-new free homes, furnishings and businesses and were trained to run them.
Of course, one race was not allowed these luxuries because of West Virginia's segregation laws.
Americans don't want to remember the past socialist programs which were enacted for the betterment of its acceptable citizens.
The United States governmental history is also one of hypocrisy. Our government garnered a deal between Native American tribes holding slaves some 30 years after slavery was abolished. Our illustrious governmental representatives made sure those adult slaves received 40 acres of land apiece. Land the tribes received from military enforced treaty signings.
Clearly, wealthy Americans fear socialism. The fight is fettered in irons of social bigotry. If we look closely into the history of freebies in America, many wealthy families prominent today will find their roots attached to socialism.
