Justice system keeping jails full

Editor:

Remember Dwight David Eisenhower. Every school kid knows he was the brains behind the nation's U.S. interstate system.

Do you recall when Ike, in his farewell address, warned future leaders to beware the military-industrial complex? Of course, President Eisenhower's warning was and still is, disregarded.

Witness our nation's unending state of armed forces contracts, and the resultant billions of dollars descending into the pockets of war profiteers. Now, privatized prisons create an incarceration incentive. We have the prison industry raking in striking proceeds.

After all, our justice system is keeping their prisons jam-packed with multitudes of nonviolent offenders --mainly drug users. One state judge told me that 99 out of 100 prisoners he sentenced were implicated with drugs.

It's a sugary agreement, no doubt, between the corporate prison honchos and their pimp legislators, who  depend on corporate money for their re-election campaigns. They are the same kind of legislators who don't want safety posters at mine openings.

Consequently, to persuade their constituents that our social order is in ominous danger they point to the filled-to-capacity prisons as evidence that we need to construct more new buildings to make room for criminals. I fear that the cruel and wasteful cycle of our nation's "War on Drugs" will never conclude unless and until we transform our system of dispensing justice.
