Christian Democrats support moral values
Regarding the Clairmont L. Smith letter of Feb. 19, in West Virginia there are many Democrats who believe in Christ. Their moral values are practiced, held in high esteem and taught in their homes and churches! Thomas Jefferson described Jesus as one who practiced and taught "moral values" more so than anyone in history. These values are failing because we as believers and our churches are not practicing and teaching them to our children and grandchildren. When was the last time you prayed for our leaders, including President Obama?
Quoting Ann Coulter, a radical Republican, does not bode well for the argument. She doesn't have a good grasp on "moral values." Her vocabulary is full of disrespect and incivility.
Classifying the Democratic Party's beliefs as only rejecting God and his gifts, supporting abortions and unions and prohibiting prayer in school shows a lack of understanding and respect. This argument is just recycled rhetoric of Coulter and Rush Limbaugh. These two commentators lack civility, respect and common decency by promoting falsehoods and contempt.
As a Christian Democrat, I fully support our senior citizens, veterans, the middle class and rights of the common worker, the poor, and I believe in protecting the rights of the disabled and mentally challenged. Our ancestors shed their blood to obtain rights for these people and many others.
Franklin D. Roosevelt stated in his second inauguration, "But here is the challenge to our democracy: In this nation I see tens of millions of its citizens who at the very moment are denied the greater part of what the very lowest standard of today called the necessities of life. Families trying to live on incomes so meager that the pall of family disaster hangs over them day by day. I see millions whose denied education, recreation and the opportunity to better their lot and the lot of their children. I see millions lacking the means to buy the products of farm and factory and by poverty denying work and productiveness to many other millions. I see one-third of our nation ill housed, ill clad, ill nourished."
These are the same signs we see today! These are the challenges I want to defeat!
I am proud that Jesus is my Savior and I am proud to be a progressive voting Democrat! We need to return to practicing common decency to all, regardless of our party affiliation.
