Let democracy trump gun industry profits
Our democracy has been usurped by an industry intent on creating profits no matter the cost. We need to find a way to take back our democracy and enact the will of the people.
The gun industry's strategy to incite the fear of losing our Second Amendment rights is so distorted and extreme it makes a mockery of the true democratic values embedded in the Constitution and should be debunked at every opportunity.
'Taliban' comparison insults real victims
Ed Rabel's "In praise of Katelyn Campbell" compared Katelyn Campbell to Malala Yousafzai and Pam Stenzel to the Taliban. Malala was shot in the head because, by simply going to school, she was "the symbol of the infidels and obscenity."
Sohaila, an Afghan woman, received 100 lashes for walking with a man who was not her relative. Had she been married, a packed stadium of 30,000 men would have watched with excitement as the Taliban mercilessly stoned her to death.
Do Mrs. Stenzel's fiery assemblies compare to the public humiliation of a woman for walking down the street? Rabel's analogy is insulting to every woman that has suffered at the hands of the Taliban.
The amount of misinformation surrounding this ordeal is exasperating. Quotes appear in newspapers and disappear in actual recordings. Stories are changed during hearings and the majority of "concerned citizens" could not locate West Virginia on a map from their Greenwich Village townhouse. Rabel is simply perpetuating a cycle of misinformation by making bombastically false statements about a very delicate situation.
