The third Jamboree had about 50,000 scouts and leaders from all over the world. President Eisenhower and Bob Hope visited us. Hollywood actor Chill Wills visited our troop and put his arm around me.
The whole experience was one of the highlights of my life and the first of many trips I have taken all over the world with my book business in the past 60 years.

Democrats ran from Obama at re-election
Hoppy Kerchival must have a short memory. In complaining about President Obama's apparent lack of concern for West Virginia Democrats, he seems to forget how fast those party officials ran from him and his re-election effort.
On the other hand, many Democrats from coal-burning states supported Obama all the way, including his efforts to clean up the air and to combat climate change. In Texas there is an appropriate quip: Dance with the one who brung you. I guess Obama knows that line.
Yes to praise for former Gov. Moore
My spiritual adviser, John Stirewalt, late of Consol Coal and Arch Coal, liked to say: "Buck, when Fidel is dead, you will be the last communist in the Western Hemisphere."
Nevertheless, I rise to give a hearty "amen" to Dr. A. Thomas McCoy's paean of praise for Arch Moore on July 30.
As Brad Crouser wrote in his seminal text on West Virginia politics (his biography of Gov. Moore): "We shall not look upon his like again."
This line, of course, was Laertes' summation of the life of the Prince of Denmark.
