Time to overthrow Banana Republicans
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- I am giving the crackpot Republicans a new title. From now on they will be known as Banana Republicans after Latin American Banana Republics famous for their brutal dictators. Most of the banana republic dictators seized power from democracies by coup d'état.
Just like the whacko Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives, the military dictators in places like El Salvador, Chile, Nicaragua and Panama hated freely elected, civilian governments for deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed -- the middle class and even poor citizens.
Banana Republic dictators could always be found in bed with the rich -- the oligarchs. Banana Republicans in the U.S. support the wealthy 1 percent while throttling the middle class and poor people. Banana Republicans want to disqualify minority voters -- blacks and Latinos. And Banana Republicans also want to control women, depriving them of their right to choose. And in their latest dictatorial tactic, Banana Republicans want to impeach the president and wipe out the government by shutting it down to deprive millions of Americans health care.
Augusto Pinochet would be proud of the American Banana Republicans. So would Fulgencio Batista. And so, too, Anastasio Somoza. Do you remember those banana republic dictators? Probably not. You see, the citizens of their countries rose up and overthrew them, consigning them to the dustbins of history while re-establishing freedom and democracy. Perhaps the good citizens of the United States could take a lesson from their cousins in Latin America and restore America's own beloved democracy by overthrowing the American Banana Republicans in 2014.
VA drivers being shortchanged
The state Department of Veteran's Affairs plans to renege on money earned by drivers of the vans that transport patients to VA medical centers for their appointments. We receive $75 a day to help with our expenses and have been told that due to budgetary shortfalls we won't be paid for May and June. For some drivers this represents a considerable financial setback. I'd guess this involves a few dozen drivers and a few thousand dollars. This is money we've earned.
Gov. Tomblin and Secretary Thompson could serve and honor the veterans of West Virginia by finding the funds to meet this obligation.
