Obesity, not famine, is the world's pandemic today. I guess that settled science - "demographers agree almost unanimously" - isn't necessarily good science.

Don't get me wrong. The world had its problems.

Lake Erie was declared dead. Peregrine falcons and other birds seemed headed for extinction. Smog was a major problem.

But laws already on the books and agencies already created at the state and federal level were working on that.

Officials at General Motors were lobbying to end leaded gasoline so GM's catalytic converters could be installed in all cars. This did more to clean the air than any hippie chanting or U.N. program did.

In 1970, 30 years after that first Earth Day, the Environmental Protection Agency issued a report.

"Since 1970, total U.S. population increased 29 percent, vehicle miles traveled increased 121 percent, and the gross domestic product increased 104 percent," the report said.

"During that same period, notable reductions in air quality concentrations and emissions took place."

The air and the water definitely were cleaner in 2000 than in 1970, and they are even cleaner today.

The Earth Day trippers have run out of pollution and are now attacking carbon dioxide - the air we exhale.

Which reminds me, the biggest polluters in the world turned out to be the communist states of China, the Soviet Union and the Eastern bloc nations.

The Aral Sea is 90 percent smaller than it was before the Soviets came into power.

The concern back in the 1970s was global cooling. We would freeze to death.

To today's devotees of the notion that evil capitalism is destroying the world and melting glaciers and the polar icecaps, Happy Lenin's Birthday.

I try to respect all religions.
