Norm Reynolds: Don't restrict rights of competent gun owners
Advertiser

I am a registered voter and a gun enthusiast. I was taught firearms safety by my father at a very early age. My father taught me gun safety at age 6 back in 1960. I am in favor of stricter requirements for an individual to purchase or to own any type of firearm.

In our country, individuals are not allowed to operate a motor vehicle without proving that they possess the ability and skills to operate a motor vehicle safely on our roads. I believe that individuals who wish to own a firearm should have a thorough background check, as well as a required gun owner safety course just to possess a firearm. These requirements could be similar to requirements one must comply with to obtain a "concealed carry permit."

I have owned firearms since I was a young boy; however, I am not a hunter and have no intentions of hunting wild game in the future. My interest in firearms basically surrounds defensive type weapons that include assault type rifles, as well as pistols that include high capacity magazines. I don't have a large collection of guns, but hope to have the ability and firepower available to protect my family and home from hard-core criminals who may want to do harm to me or to my family. I believe that the law-abiding citizen should have the ability to be armed at least as well as the criminal out on the street.

Loopholes in gun shows or private transfer of firearms to individuals should be regulated, but restricting law-abiding citizens who have demonstrated the ability to safely handle all types of firearms should not be allowed.

My father fought in World War II under General Patton and was a business owner and registered firearms dealer after his return from France and Germany back in 1945. He was shot in an armed robbery attempt in his place of business in 1970 and nearly lost his life.

Please do not vote to restrict responsible citizens the right to own the proper firepower needed to protect their home and family from potential criminals who will always have access to these types of weapons.

My Dad had a sign in his general store back in the 1960s that read, "When Guns are outlawed; only outlaws will have guns."

I believe this remains true today.

I trust that you will consider options and laws that will help protect our citizens from criminals and the mentally ill from possessing any type of firearm without restricting the rights of trained competent gun owners, or firearm enthusiast who only want the ability to protect their person, home, family and nation from enemies within, as well as those from without who may desire to do harm to individual citizens or to our nation as a whole.
