Today my daughter had teachers absent in two different classes at Riverside High School. She sat in the cafeteria and did nothing during these two periods. Why do they not have substitutes? My child is not getting a proper education at RHS.
Bearing arms in West Virginia: Because he was armed, a West Virginia landlord was able to subdue and hold for police an alleged serial strong-arm robber, burglar, kidnapper and con man who had preyed on the elderly for several months.
A Georgetown professor told his class, "The most educated and least educated people tend to vote Democratic. The ones in between tend to vote Republican, which proves -- a little knowledge is a dangerous thing."
Suppose I'm a wife and a Methodist, fresh out of college, and the only accounting job I can find is working for the Catholic Church. Health-care reform is saying that my employer's insurance plan must allow me to get birth control pills -- so health reform is protecting my religious freedom, not interfering with it.
MSHA will cover up the guilty in its internal review report and promote them if it hasn't already done it.
West Virginia Democrats from our state are voting the Republican vote to destroy unions of our aviation and railroad industries. I will vote independent or not at all for these new Republican standouts in the next election. What a shame and outrage. It's time to clean house.
Hundreds of miners are losing their jobs in Boone County while Obama supporters are saying the economy is improving. I don't think Obama supporters have a clue.
Iraq was 4,500 wasted lives, seven wasted years and almost $1 trillion wasted. Now the chickenhawks, whose desire for combat increases with their distance from the fighting, are beating the war drums for Iran. Will we ever learn to ignore them?
Did I hear that right? I thought I heard on last night's news that the mayor and City Council voted to cut 10 police positions in addition to the cuts the fire department just took, but they authorized over a million dollars for new vehicles. That can't be right, can it?
Romney says he's not concerned about the poor because they have a safety net. He says he is concerned about the middle class. What he doesn't understand is that many who were in the middle class are now part of the poor.
Problem-solving using positive conflict resolution is stressed to the students in Kanawha County schools. It is sad that the adults involved in the conflict regarding the addition of the name Mary Snow to the name West Side Elementary are modeling for the students the negative aspect of the practice of conflict resolution.
The boy in Hurricane used headphones to block out comments made by others. By listening to music he could escape into his own world without bullies. Yes, some of his classmates drove him into the situation that took his life.
I'd love to see Clint Eastwood give the keynote address at the next Democratic Convention. "It's halftime, America. Hear our engines roar."
A group of us in Putnam County have really been concerned over who was watching the bond money. We knew the raises were going to start. Look out. This is just the tip of the iceberg. They need to be investigated.

President Obama's health-care reform act is having a significant impact on women, ending a gender discrimination by insurance companies and allowing women, not their insurance companies, to decide what care is right for them. It also covers more preventative care, such as mammograms.
My husband is a coal miner soon to join the ranks of the unemployed. We will have no health insurance. I'm a diabetic with high blood pressure, and my blood pressure is getting higher trying to figure out what to do. So my husband will be an unemployed coal miner, and chances are he will be a widower too.
Why would the AFL-CIO ask people to join Working America? So they could sponsor more politicians of their choice?
Psychologists are saying that Facebook and Twitter is more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol. It must be. Next time you go to a restaurant, look around at the people around you, or are you the person sitting at the table with a phone? Everybody has a phone, an iPhone, Android, whatever, and you're ignoring each other. You're losing touch with people. That little thing you're holding in your hand is not reality.
Christianity is not just about going to church. It's more than that. It's supposed to be a way of living, of caring about our neighbors, which means everyone else on our planet. All the spite and resentment toward others should show us that many of us still have a way to go. Isn't it worth a try?
As usual, we find our President Obama being a liar and a hypocrite. He denounced the formation of super PACs and them raising money, yet he's gone out and formed his own super PAC to raise additional money for himself. But again, that's what the hypocrite that we have in the White House is.
To the anti-monkey-kissing offendant, if just seeing a person kiss his pet disturbs you that much: a) don't look, Ethel; b) please don't allow yourself to get upset over something so unimportant when there are so many more terrible and tragic things going on in our world today.
I'm over in Spring Hill, and I'd like to know how a city of Dunbar cop could come over and write a ticket to somebody. Are they that hard up that they have to come over to another city to write tickets? I think something's kind of fishy on that.
I don't agree with Dave Hickman's article on 'Kilicli holds the key to WVU's basketball team' like he's the greatest. Have you ever watched how many mistakes he makes in a game's time? He does one good thing and does three bad ones behind it. He's forever making mistakes.
It is very foolish for the city of Charleston to announce where they will conduct checkpoints.
As far as cutting the police force in Charleston, they could cut another hundred and still be doing good, because Huntington is geographically three times as large as Charleston and only has half the police force, so instead of 10 it needs to be 110 cut.
Everybody's jumping around for joy and clapping their hands because they created 247,000 jobs last month. That didn't tell you how many people retired or how many people quit looking for work or how many people died while on the job or working. So that brings it down quite a bit, don't it?
An old saying: You can fool some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time. Please read the Gazette's editorial page article by E.J. Dionne. See what five Supreme Court conservative judges have done to dismantle our democracy.
I thought the picture in the paper of the man kissing the monkey was a very nice picture, especially of the monkey. And if you, as a reader, don't like seeing that picture, there's no one twisting your arm making you sit there and stare at it. Just go on to something else.
