I love my country. I fear my government.

Ever notice how those at the top who make the outrageous salaries are the first to claim that raising the minimum wage will cause inflation? Forgoing their bonus for one year would take care of it all.

More pay! That's all you ever hear from the teachers unions. If more pay were a solution to education problems, they would have been solved a long time ago. The unions need to understand that the days of raises are about over. Live within your means and quit asking for more.

People were as bad 10 years [ago as they are today]. They just didn't put it out there for public display.

Looks like the most corrupt organization on Earth is looking for a new leader.

The argument that we can't predict what a present, law-abiding citizen might do with a gun in the future is a silly thought. If that line of thinking were true, shouldn't we take away people's cars because they might take a drink one day and maybe drive? My dad owned many guns in his lifetime and he never once thought of using one to commit a crime.

Obama's comment regarding "drifting from one manufactured crisis to the next" seems to me rather dubious considering he lives by the Alinsky motto: "Never let a good crisis go to waste."

Still not a word in the newspaper regarding the WVU women's basketball team. I ask: Why are they ignored?

I'm sure proud of the fact I didn't vote for Patrick Morrisey.

It's very clear that the same old thugs in Rand don't fear the criminal justice system one bit, and why should they? It's pathetic.

Let's just face it. Republicans care about guns a lot more than they care about kids.

The speeding in Dunbar is out of control on 10th Street. The police need to use radar, if they still have it. [The] street is like a racetrack.

While watching the GOP act like pouting children, threatening to filibuster President Obama's Cabinet picks, I realized that if the Democrats had done that to George W. Bush concerning Donald Rumsfeld and Colin Powell, maybe they could have prevented the Iraq war and saved 4,000 American lives.

Much to the consternation of the Gazette editors, Sen. Manchin is a Democrat. But he is not a member of the radical left-wing element of the party that the Gazette is a mouthpiece for.

What does Obama have to do with the high prices of your food, gas, medicine and utilities? Nothing. Pure capitalism at it's finest!

If you wonder why WVU was not invited to join the Big 10 or ACC, just read the newspaper! Would you want those dysfunctional folks in Morgantown listed in your family tree? I don't think so!

Republicans say they're conservative, but most of the Christian Republicans I know are pretty liberal since they drink alcohol and work on the Sabbath. They are conservative, however, in whom they care for, because it's pretty much just themselves and their family.

President Obama is such a wimp. Can you imagine what Dick Cheney would tell John McCain if John asked him for information? He would tell John McCain to go and [you know what], just like he did to Sen. Patrick Leahy.

Republicans haven't learned a thing after getting thumped in the last election. It is fun to watch them self-destruct with their continued obstructionism.

When are Republicans in the U.S. Senate going to quit acting like children [about] confirming President Obama's Cabinet members and get on with some important Senate business like helping the American people?

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said that the sequestration was President Obama's idea. The record is that 174 Republican members of the House of Representatives voted for the Budget Control Act, which included the sequestration. West Virginia's Shelley Capito voted for it.

I think the building in the Sunday paper that is called the "mystery school" was on a gravel lot next to the YWCA on Quarrier Street. At different times it was a high school, junior high school and, in 1937, Mercer Grade School. I have pictures of the building on the corner of Quarrier and Morris streets, and it's not the same building in the "mystery school" picture.

When I saw the photo in the Gazette of the new reading nook on the second floor of the downtown library, it made me wonder why we need a new library. And if they waste money on a new library, what's to become of that grand old building on Capitol Street?

I just read an item in the Coal Valley News saying that in February 1969, Southern West Virginia coal miners went on strike over black lung. A lot of us can remember when coal miners were men, and not the "Friends of Coal" female cats they are now.
