Regarding the item in Sunday's paper about the bad effects of long absences on student achievement and dropout rates: This proves that teachers are effective when students are in class.
In response to the reader and all others who believe our government is or should be bound by the Bible, you are wrong. America was founded on freedom of religion, not to be bound by it. If you choose to believe the Bible, that is fine for you. But no one else should be expected to live by your personal set of morals.
At 81, I've experienced a lot. Yes, I was even one of the "takers" when, in my early 30s, for six months, I was on unemployment insurance, having lost my job. But I provided for myself and my family my entire life, and now welcome the opportunity to embrace all my fellow Americans in Obamacare. Health care is a right, not a privilege.
Ms. Jacobs should realize the citizens are already ignorant because our public schools are failures. The school board smugly takes us for granted by callously taking money from the library and then holding an expensive, fruitless election. They should wait for the general election and keep the library funding totally separate.
Take the money from the school administration and put it in the classroom. I'm for the library but not the failing schools. The public schools should get their act together and quit trying to fool us.
Do all those who say they are celebrating the birth of Jesus not know that Jesus was not born on Dec. 25? In fact, Jesus wasn't even born in December. He was most likely born in mid-June. I do not understand why people camp out to buy stuff and call it celebrating the birth of Christ when there is greed in their hearts.
Hawkish right-wingers cannot just wish things into being and change history. Their sad past is still causing problems and with their stalling our progress is costing the economy billions. Looking into a fictitious crystal ball and making statements less than factual needs to go into the low-end science fiction junk pile.
Amazing to me that a man can get arrested on the East End for peddling rock dust when on any given day the Police Department kindly ignores thieves, drug dealers, prostitutes and vandals. Oh, that's right. Only politicians deserve to be protected!
