New River Gorge visitors centers reopen

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. -- The National Park Service has reopened the visitor centers at the New River Gorge National River.

Officials said the Canyon Rim Visitor Center, in Lansing, and the Sandstone Visitor Center, near Hinton, were to reopen Friday with limited services.

Park Service employees are continuing assessments and cleanup of damage to park locations from superstorm Sandy.

All park areas were closed Monday in anticipation of bad weather conditions. Other closures at the park are still in effect.

Officials also say park staff have not conducted full assessments of the numerous trails, but preliminary assessments indicate widespread tree damage on the trails.

The Park Service is advising visitors to stay off the trails because of downed trees and the potential for weakened trees to continue falling.
