Advertiser

TULSA, Okla. -- Jeremy Starks of Scott Depot stands in 32nd place after the first day of the Bass Angler Sportsman Society's Bassmaster Classic.

Starks boated a five-bass limit that weighed in at 10 pounds, 14 ounces on Grand Lake O' the Cherokee.

Mike Iaconelli of Pittsgrove, N.J. and Cliff Pace of Petal, Miss., were the first-day co-leaders with catches of 21 pounds, 8 ounces. Defending champion Chris Lane was the only angler in the field to fail to catch a single fish.

Starks, who has a biology degree from West Virginia University, acknowledged that he has ground to make up to reach his goal of making the 25-angler cut and qualifying for Sunday's final round.

Starks, who said he was "too cold to be nervous" in his Bassmaster Classic debut, qualified for the tournament by winning the Douglas Challenge last spring.
