The project involves the installation of log and boulder structures designed to narrow the stream channel to increase flow velocity and flush away sand and silt deposits. Dispersal of the sediment exposes streambed cobble -- habitat for aquatic insects, which in turn provide food for fish.
Installation of the structures -- 198 in all -- also reduces stream bank erosion.
A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency consent decree with Appalachian Power contributes $1.45 million to the project, with the remaining money coming from the DEP's Stream Restoration Fund.
R.E.I. Consulting designed the project, which is being engineered by Stantec Inc. Work is expected to be complete by December 2014.
