MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The West Virginia University physics department is giving people a chance to witness a rare solar event that won't occur again for 105 years.

The planetarium and observatory on the fourth floor of Hodges Hall will open to the public the evening of June 5 for the transit of Venus.

When Venus passes between earth and the sun, it appears as a small dot gliding across the sun's face.

The show begins at 6:04 p.m. and lasts until about 8:42 p.m.

Several solar scopes also will be available at White Hall. Other activities include videos describing historic transits of the past and an iPad station for accessing current images of the sun.
