W.Va. to host continental Irish road bowling final
BRUCETON MILLS, W.Va. -- One of the oldest sports in the world is coming to West Virginia.
The Irish Road Bowling North American Region Finals will take place at Coopers Rock State Forest, near Bruceton Mills, on Saturday and Sunday.
In Irish road bowling, a small cannonball is hurled down a country road. The competitor with the fewest throws to get to the finish line wins.
The event is open to the public and will take place on Henry Clay Road, which will be closed to traffic.
Novice bowlers also will get a chance to compete. On Friday, beginners will have the opportunity to qualify for the weekend semifinals.
The winners in several categories advance to the All-Ireland finals in early September.
