Gauley whitewater season to be in full swing after decent rainfalls
Advertiser

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- While drought has plagued much of the United States this year, rainfall in the Gauley River drainage area has been in the normal range, allowing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide a full schedule of fall releases from Summersville Dam for the Gauley's fall whitewater season.

A 21-day season is on tap for 2012, according to the West Virginia Professional River Outfitters Association. Minimum releases of 2,800 cubic feet per second will be made each day of the season, which draws more than 60,000 people to the rapid-crammed stretch of river between Summersville Dam and Swiss in Nicholas County.

Gauley release dates this year will be Sept. 7-10, 14-17, 21-24 and 28-30, plus Oct. 5-8, 13-14, with a final day on Oct. 21.
