Bridge Day to feature motorcycle safety
FAYETTEVILLE - Parachutists and rappelers will be joined at this year's Bridge Day by 200 motorcycle enthusiasts.
But a motorcycle ride scheduled across the bridge during the Oct. 18 festival isn't just a pleasure trip. The West Virginia Motorcycle Safety Program is sponsoring the ride to promote safety awareness.
Program coordinator Joe Tyree says it's a perfect way to create awareness of motorcycle safety because Bridge Day draws large crowds.
The Bridge Day Commission has approved the ride for 200 motorcyclists and passengers.
Ribbon-cutting set for U.S. 35 segment
WINFIELD - After years of planning, the first phase of the U.S. 35 upgrade is about to be completed.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Putnam County segment of the highway is planned for Friday afternoon.
Among those scheduled to attend are Gov. Joe Manchin, state Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox and Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito.
When finished, the four-lane highway will stretch 35 miles from Crooked Creek in Putnam County to Point Pleasant in Mason County.
Upgrading U.S. 35 to four lanes has been on the drawing board for decades. The road is a popular thoroughfare for tractor-trailers traveling between West Virginia and Ohio and has been the site of numerous accidents.
Ram takes a stroll through Huntington
HUNTINGTON - A ram taking in the sights in downtown Huntington has become quite the spectacle itself.
Joe Eddins said he saw a ram in Ritter Park on Sunday while walking his dog. He just happened to have a camera with him and snapped a few photographs before a passing car startled the ram and it ran into the woods.
Huntington Police Capt. Mike Albers said officers tracked the ram on bicycles on Monday, where it was seen walking downtown. Several callers dialed 911 to report ram sightings.
After its encore appearance Monday, the ram crossed a set of railroad tracks and retreated back into the hills.
