WVC: UC men, women both win

Robert Strickland scored 22 points to lead the University of Charleston to its fourth consecutive victory in the McDonough Center, a 79-65 decision over host Wheeling Jesuit in a West Virginia Conference men's basketball matchup Monday night.

Strickland also contributed six rebounds and six assists. John White and Marquis Brooks donated 14 points apiece for UC (14-6 overall, 8-5 WVC) while Austin Weatherington had 11 and Jamaal Williams 10.

"We played a fine game and one of the best of the year," said UC coach Greg White. "We picked up a quality road win at one of the harder venues.

"This victory means a lot because we picked up some critical momentum, and you need all the momentum you can get this late in the season."

Adam McFerran netted 18 points for Wheeling Jesuit (10-10, 5-8) and Derek Wise added 14.

    Emily Jones scored 24 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the University of Charleston to a 71-55 victory over Wheeling Jesuit in a West Virginia Conference women's basketball matchup Monday at the McDonough Center in Wheeling.

    Veronica Carman added 12 points and nine assists for the Golden Eagles (13-8 overall, 10-4 WVC) while Jihan Williams and Kaitlyn Arick each pitched in 11 points. UC shot 11-for-22 from long range as four different players hit at least two 3s.

    "I felt like they really came out and played with heart and determination," said UC coach Sherry Winn. "We really needed a win after losing to Seton Hill last week at home, but this victory shows how this team responds after a loss."

    Lindsay Stuckley donated 11 points for Jesuit (5-15, 4-9).

  • WEST LIBERTY 69, W.VA. STATE 42: Cassie Smith tallied 15 points as host West Liberty downed West Virginia State.
  • Lauren Russell added eight points and 13 rebounds for the Hilltoppers. Tiffany Finkton netted 10 points for the Yellow Jackets (6-14, 4-9). Danielle Davis and Shandi White each added eight.
