Roundup: W.Va. State sweeps season-opening doubleheader

First baseman J.D. Broderick homered and drove in two runs as West Virginia State defeated West Liberty 8-5 in the second game of a doubleheader, giving the Yellow Jackets a sweep of West Liberty Sunday at Winfield in their season debut.

In the first game, State collected only three hits but edged the Hilltoppers 3-2.

The Yellow Jackets' Josh Kuykendall won the opener, pitching two innings of three-hit relief, and Shane Long earned the win in the nightcap, allowing one run and two hits in three innings of relief.

State's Chad Chambers also homered in the second game.

WVU BASEBALL: Sophomore Steve Morrison pitched eight strong innings in his first start of the season to lead West Virginia to a 4-1 victory over George Mason Sunday in the Baseball at the Beach Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Morrison (1-0) allowed just one run on five hits while striking out 10. The Mountaineers recorded 12 hits and were paced by multiple-hit games from Jedd Gyorko, Justin Parks and Tyler Kuhn.

WVU (5-3) returns to action for its home opener against Duquesne at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Hawley Field.

MARSHALL BASEBALL: Western Carolina rallied from an early four-run deficit to defeat Marshall 9-7 Sunday in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Herd's Kurt Lipton contributed three hits and four RBIs, and Nate Lape had three hits and two RBIs. The Herd (2-5) returns to non-conference action Tuesday at Radford, Va.

UC BASEBALL: First baseman Jim Clarke went 5-for-5 with seven RBIs and two home runs as the University of Charleston defeated Davis & Elkins 18-2 Sunday at Triana Field.

Catcher Kyle Root added a 3-for-5 day with four RBIs and a homer, contributing to a 16-hit UC attack.  Alex Shaw pitched a complete-game four-hitter for the victory.

HERD BASKETBALL LUNCHEONS: Marshall men's basketball coach Donnie Jones' two remaining basketball luncheons are scheduled for today and Monday March 10.
