West Virginia State moved into sole possession of second place in the West Virginia Conference Friday after sweeping a softball doubleheader from the University of Charleston in Institute.
Margaret Osborne's sacrifice fly plated Kaitlin Thomas for the winning run as State edge UC 3-2 in the opener. Bobbi Harper belted a run-scoring triple to bring in the tying run.
In the nightcap, Jessica Osborne tripled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning for the Yellow Jackets (32-12 overall, 16-5 WVC) as they earned a 3-1 win and the sweep. State will play host to Seton Hill in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today.
TECH BASEBALL: WVU Tech remained alive in the NAIA Mid-South Conference double-elimination tournament Friday with an 11-2 win over Pikeville (Ky.) in the losers' bracket at Georgetown, Ky.
Campbellsville downed Tech 4-1 in Thursday's opener. Phil Brockman went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Tech in Friday's victory and Danny Flores had three hits. The Bears will take on Cumberlands at 2:30 p.m. today.
Brockman and Flores were both named Friday to the All-Mid-South first team. Brockman led the Mid-South in home runs (eight) and RBIs (30) and was fifth in batting average (.358). Flores hit .313. Tech's Gerardo Hernandez, Tommy Nutt, Jeff Krauklis and Justin Maynard were honorable mention selections.
TECH SOFTBALL: Pikeville scored seven unearned runs en route to an 8-0 win over WVU Tech, eliminating the Golden Bears from the Mid-South Conference tournament Friday in Georgetown, Ky. Brittany Summer went 2-for-2 for Tech (5-31). Golden Bears sophomore Jada Powell was named All-Mid-South first team Thursday. Powell paced the Golden Bears with a .342 batting average and 14 RBIs. Amy McLaughlin and Morgan DiBello were honorable mention.
PREP BASEBALL: South Charleston senior Trey King will sign a letter of intent at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the school to play baseball at Alice Lloyd College, an NAIA school in Pippa Passes, Ky. King, a Class AAA all-state honorable mention selection last season, is batting .352.
