WVC baseball tourney gets under way today

As the West Virginia Conference baseball tournament gets an early start this morning in Johnstown, Pa., four of the six teams are ranked in the top six in the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Region.

Concord has risen to the top of the region, with Pitt Johnstown third, West Virginia State fifth and Shepherd sixth. Six teams will make up the North Atlantic Region field, with the WVC and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament champions getting an automatic bid.

The regional rankings give new urgency to this morning's first-round game between State (32-11) and Shepherd (28-19). The Rams moved up two spots in this week's ranking, while the Yellow Jackets stayed put at No. 5.

Most of the action in the double-elimination tournament takes place at Johnstown's Point Stadium, beginning with UPJ (35-15-1) and Alderson-Broaddus (26-16-1) at 9:30 p.m. State and Shepherd are playing across town on the UPJ campus, however, at the same time.

The third first-round game pits West Virginia Wesleyan (31-15) and Concord at 1 p.m. at Point Stadium. The first elimination game, played at UPJ, takes place at 2 p.m. and matches the 9:30 losers.

The rest of the games are set for the main site. The UPJ/A-B winner gets a chance to knock out the Wesleyan-Concord loser at 4:30 p.m., with the State-Shepherd and Wesleyan-Concord winners battling at 8.

Action continues at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, with the championship game on Sunday. The schedule depends on how many teams are still alive after Friday and Saturday.

The title game Sunday is a single game, either at 1 or 4 p.m.
