W.Va. State receives No. 2 seed in region

Three West Virginia Conference teams - West Virginia State, Concord and Pitt Johnstown - have been selected to play in the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Region baseball tournament beginning Thursday at Point Stadium in Johnstown, Pa.

The No. 2-seeded Yellow Jackets (36-12) are tentatively scheduled to oppose No. 5 Shippensburg (34-23) in the tournament's second game at 3 p.m. Thursday, unless the host school - Pitt Johnstown - decides it wants to play at that time.

For the moment, No. 3 Concord (35-13) is scheduled to face No. 4 Pitt-Johnstown (35-17-1) in Thursday's third game.

In the opening game of the six-team, double-elimination tournament, top seed West Chester (41-14) will play No. 6 Kutztown (30-24). Starting times are expected to be announced today.

The winner will advance to the Division II College World Series.

"At this point in the game, there aren't any good draws or bad draws,'' said State coach Cal Bailey. "You're happy to be there and if you're going to win it, you're going to have to beat everybody anyway.''

State enters the tournament with 20 wins in its last 22 games and has scored in double-figures 16 times this season.  Outfielders Bo Darby (.427, 14 home runs, 61 RBIs) and Eric Workman (.414, 8, 39) pace the Jacket offense. Travis McGrath (7-2, 1.79 ERA) has been the most consistent starting pitcher.

During one stretch, Concord won 16 of 17 games to reach the No. 12 spot in the national poll, but the Mountain Lions have lost four in a row. Matt Kuntz (.476, 4, 42), Greyson Schram (.464, 16, 64), Donovan Huffer (.446, 3, 40) and Tim Merolillo (.395, 12, 56) lead the Mountain Lion offense.

Pitt Johnstown entered the recent WVC tournament with 10 straight wins and the Northern Division regular-season crown, but the Mountain Cats suffered two straight losses and were the first team eliminated from the tourney.

The tournament championship game will be played either Saturday or Sunday.
