Roundup: Hurricane, Ravenswood win team titles at Catholic Invitational cross country meet

Hurricane's girls won both the high school and middle school events. The Redskins placed four girls in each top 10 as Alex Dent took the high school championship in a time of 19:39, with teammate Josie Crouch right behind her at 19:45. Tori Dent won the middle school individual title.
On the boys side, South Charleston's David Caldwell won the high school event with a time of 17:10, followed by the Ravenswood duo of Nathan Rees and Alex Cole. Madison won the middle school title, led by individual champ Will Shaffer.

HERD BASKETBALL: Marshall will kick off the basketball season with its annual Thundering Herd Madness Oct. 11 at Cam Henderson Center.
Festivities begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under.
The event marks the beginning of full preseason practice, and coach Donnie Jones will introduce eight newcomers to the program. Three are transfers, Chris Lutz, Octavius Spann and Brandon Powell; one is a sophomore who sat out last year, Marcus Goode; and the rest are new recruits, Shaquille Johnson, Damier Pitts, Dago Pena and Kore White.
The Herd will have a 3-point shootout and a slam-dunk contest, then conduct a 15-minute scrimmage. The event will mark the first day that fans who haven't purchased season tickets can do so.
Fans who purchased season tickets in 2007-08 have until Friday to renew their seat locations.

WVC GOLF: Ryan Terdick won the individual medalist honor after carding rounds of 69 and 70 for a five-under-par 139 total to lead Concord to the West Virginia Conference Central Regional men's golf tournament title Tuesday at Canaan Valley Resort.
The Mountain Lions' 36-hole team total of 578 outdistanced second-place Ohio Valley and Charleston by a mere stroke. West Liberty finished four shots off the pace for fourth.
Alex Carrigan of UC was the leader after the opening round but eventually faded to finish two strokes behind Terdik. Josh Bower of West Virginia State and Taylor Fuqua of UC finished tied for third. (For a listing of team scores and top finishers, see Page 2B.)

UC SOCCER: The University of Charleston's men's team fell to Lenoir-Rhyne College 5-2 Wednesday in Hickory, N.C. Predreg Ivanivic provided a goal and an assist for the Golden Eagles (1-7-1), who trailed 4-0 at halftime. Bryce Larsen added the other UC goal.
Holli Dalton, Sharon Lapinsky, Anita Pekalska and Alex Mahaffey each scored as the UC women's team (4-5 overall, 3-0 West Virginia Conference) turned back visiting Alderson-Broaddus. Sarah Talbott tallied the lone goal for the Battlers (1-8, 1-4).
