Roundup: Charley leads A-B past Tech

Tori Charley, a former South Charleston High standout, scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead Alderson-Broaddus to its first win of the season, a 73-48 decision over  WVU Tech in a women's basketball matchup Monday evening in Montgomery.

Charley, a 5-foot-10 junior forward from Cross Lanes, made 9-of-16 shots from the field and blocked two shots. Junior Lauren Reed added 15 points, including three 3-pointers, for the NCAA Division II Battlers (1-4).

Ashley Blaney and Sharange Young tallied 13 points apiece for WVU Tech (0-7) of the NAIA Mid-South Conference, which trailed 31-24 at halftime.

Blaney, a Woodrow Wilson graduate, landed nine rebounds, handed out three assists and came up with three steals while Young had eight boards. Jessica Johnson, a Winfield graduate, dropped in 10 points for the Golden Bears.

  • WVC AWARDS: Concord's Cordale Boyd was named the West Virginia Conference men's basketball player of the week Monday.

    The Cincinnati native was named the MVP of the Currence Classic after leading the Mountain Lions (2-1) to the tournament title last week. The 6-foot-2 senior guard averaged 25.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game.

  • Fairmont State's Ashley Vavrek was selected the WVC women's player of the week Monday. The 5-8 junior guard from Bellaire, Ohio, netted 25 points, hit six 3-pointers and grabbed six rebounds as the Falcons (2-2) picked up a key 70-60 victory over Slippery Rock.

  • SC PEP RALLY: A pep rally for the South Charleston football team will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Mound on Seventh Avenue in South Charleston.

    The rally is open to the public and SC Mayor Frank Mullens will speak. South Charleston (13-0), the top-ranked team in the state playoff ratings, will meet No. 2 George Washington (12-1) at noon Saturday in the Class AAA state championship game at Wheeling Island Stadium.

  • Advance tickets for the Class AAA championship game may be purchased at SC High School until noon Friday.
