The Herd and Bobcats begin a scheduled six-game series, and got a look at each other last December in the Detroit bowl game. Ohio used an opportunistic defense to avoid a 28-0 deficit, and the Herd had to use all of its defensive might to escape 21-17. Several of the same notable Bobcats return.
Defensively, that starts with MLB Noah Keller, who had 17 tackles in the bowl and helped the defense force 37 turnovers last season. The entire starting line returns, led by DE Dak Notestine.
Beside Keller is SLB Shannon Ballard, who started five games last year and had the game-changing 75-yard fumble return late in the second half vs. MU. The secondary is young, but SS Gerald Moore is an all-league candidate.
QB Theo Scott and WR Taylor Price have departed, but the Bobcats still have speed and talent at the skill positions. Terrence McCrae averaged 15.6 yards per catch and scored nine touchdowns, while LaVon Brazill had 53 catches for 702 yards and six TDs. Steven Goulet, a Vanderbilt transfer, also returns.
Phil Bates, an Iowa State transfer, leads the quarterback derby, with 2008 starter Boo Jackson still in the running.
Matt Weller, who hit 21-of-29 field goals but missed a short try in the bowl game, is back and Brazill, with four punt returns for TDs, is an All-America candidate. Paul Hershey, who was pressed into service at the bowl, and Kansas transfer Andy Howell are battling at punter.
