Roundup: Greenbrier Classic Youth Day to include First Tee Scramble

Ryan Kissinger, Nathaniel Begley, and Brittani White of The First Tee of West Virginia and Kolton Kooper of The First Tee of Roanoke Valley, Va. were selected to participate in an inaugural First Tee Scramble as part of The Greenbrier Classic's Youth Day at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
The four players will each be paired with a PGA player in the tournament and will compete for a charity purse of $10,000 for their First Tee program. Youth Day will be sponsored by Polo Golf, Callaway Golf, Coca-Cola, and Nature Valley and is open to all children free of charge.
WVU SWIMMING AND DIVING: West Virginia swimmers George Farquhar and Caroline Larsson each competed in their respective country's swimming championships last week.
Farquhar earned second-place finishes in the 50, 100, and 200-meter breaststroke at the Telstra Australian Short Course Championships July 14-18 at Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Larsson finished seventh in the 800-meter freestyle and 10th in the 1500-meter freestyle at the Swedish Swimming Championships July 14-18 at Malmo Sweden.
Graduate assistant and former Mountaineer swimmer, Pablo Marmolejo, earned a bronze medal for Mexico on Wednesday at the Central American and Caribbean Games being in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
Marmolejo finished third in the 100-meter butterfly and currently holds the Mexican Record for the event. He will return to action today in the 50-meter butterfly, his final event.

SHEPHERD BASKETBALL: The Shepherd men's basketball team announced three players on Wednesday, two from in-state high schools that will suit up for the Rams next season.
Musselman High School's Morgan McDonald and Washington High School's Charles Yates each signed with the college. McDonald, a 6-foot-6 forward, averaged 19 points and 14.9 rebounds last season for the Applemen and was named second-team All-State. Yates, a 6-1 guard, averaged 13.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 4.5 steals per game.

The Rams also signed Marcus Pilgrim of Bishop McNamara High School in Mitchellville, Md. The 6-0 guard averaged 9 points per game and made 44 3-pointers last season.

RIPLEY BASEBALL: Jared Taylor, a pitcher-outfielder at Ripley, has signed with the baseball program at West Liberty.
Taylor, a second-team Class AAA all-state pick, hit .457 as a senior and carried an 8-1 pitching record.

AMERICAN LEGION: Jason Lewis pitched and hit South Charleston Post 94 into the American Legion Area 3 tournament championship game with a 10-0 mercy-rule, eight-inning win Wednesday over Beckley Post 32 at Buffalo.
SC will take on the Beckley-Parkersburg Post 15 winner at 6 p.m. Friday for the title. Lewis struck out 11 and went 3-for-4 with two doubles for SC.

XPLOSION ADVANCES: The West Virginia Xplosion downed the Houston Elite 65-42 Wednesday in the AAU boys basketball national 11-and-under tournament in Cocoa Beach, Fla.
The Xplosion advances to the 32-team championship bracket and plays the Atlanta Celtics at 11:40 a.m. today. If the Xplosion wins, it plays again at 6:20 p.m.
